Parts of the Gaza Strip are now officially in famine, according to a report published Friday by a UN-backed initiative.
The document warns that the situation could expand in the coming months, amid restrictions on humanitarian aid imposed by Israel during nearly two years of war.
While some people have already died of starvation, others lost their lives trying to access distribution sites run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), an entity backed by the United States and Israel.
The GHF was created to replace a UN aid system that Israel had questioned, according to CNN.

According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), famine has been confirmed in Gaza Governorate, which includes Gaza City — also the scene of a new Israeli military offensive.
The report highlights that malnutrition now threatens the lives of 132,000 children under five, including 41,000 severe cases — double the numbers reported in May.

The Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), Israel’s agency in charge of aid distribution, rejected the report’s conclusions even before its release.
COGAT argued that the analysis relied on “biased and partial data” provided by Hamas.

The Israeli agency stated that the IPC evaluation “completely ignores the extensive humanitarian campaign carried out in Gaza” and claimed that its contributions were disregarded by the report’s authors.
According to COGAT, more than 100,000 aid trucks have entered Gaza since the war began.
They carry food, fuel, shelter supplies, and medicine.
Yet civilians continue to face critical hunger and obstacles in accessing assistance.
Conclusion
The tension around aid distribution has led to deadly incidents, with reports that humanitarian convoys have been attacked or taken over by armed factions.
International organizations warn that the blockade, ongoing military operations, and lack of safe access for aid agencies are worsening the crisis.
The famine in Gaza reflects the scale of the humanitarian emergency, with thousands of families entirely dependent on external assistance for survival.
