Two people were arrested in Long Island, near the Port of Boston, for allegedly operating drones dangerously in a restricted area.

The incident occurred near Logan Airport, where the proximity of the devices poses a critical risk to air safety.

The arrested individuals, identified as Duffy and Folcik, were located using advanced UAS monitoring technology.

This technology enabled authorities to detect the drone, its altitude, location, and identify the operators, reported Daily Mail.

Both individuals were found at the closed Long Island Health Campus, where police discovered a drone inside Duffy’s backpack.

However, a third individual managed to escape the area using a small boat docked on the island, according to the Boston Police Department.

This incident occurs amidst an alarming context: in recent weeks, unexplained drone sightings have been reported.

These sightings have occurred across various areas in the northeastern United States, including military bases and airports.

What Happened with These Sightings Near the Boston’s Logan Airport?

An airport in Orange County, New York, even had to temporarily close its airspace last Friday due to the presence of a drone.

The sightings began in mid-November, when drones were spotted flying over the U.S. Army’s Picatinny Arsenal.

Additionally, drones were seen over the golf course of President-elect Donald Trump in Bedminster, New Jersey.

Since then, the sightings have spread to other states, including Pennsylvania and New York.

What Did Authorities Say After the Drone in Massachussets Incident?

The FBI and federal agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Communications Commission are investigating these incidents.

Although they do not appear to pose a direct threat, they generate uncertainty and concern among residents and authorities.

The Boston Police Department warned about the dangers posed even by small drones, stating they could cause catastrophic damage if they collide with aircraft.

“Near-accidental collisions can force pilots off course, endangering lives and property,” the department emphasized in a statement.

Other Arrests and Increased Monitoring

Authorities reminded recreational drone operators of the importance of complying with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations.

These regulations prohibit flying over people, vehicles, or restricted airspace. The case of Duffy and Folcik is not the first.

On November 30, Yinpiao Zhou, a Chinese national residing in California, was arrested for flying a drone over Vandenberg Space Force Base in Santa Barbara.

Zhou’s drone captured images of the military base, raising concerns about possible foreign surveillance, reported Daily Mail.
