Walmart has introduced a new security measure across its stores in Illinois aimed at improving the shopping experience while reducing the need for frequent employee interaction.

The initiative comes in response to a surge in thefts at its locations, which has led the company to secure small items like razors, clothing, detergent, and toothpaste behind locked displays.

To streamline the process, Walmart is implementing an innovative system that allows employees to unlock display cases without using manual keys.

This system is already operational in several stores across the state.

One of the most notable changes is the introduction of mobile unlocking for Walmart+ members through a facial recognition system called “Freedom Case.”

With this technology, customers will no longer have to wait for an employee to access items stored behind plexiglass displays.

Walmart’s goal is to speed up access to these products and reduce wait times for shoppers.

Previously, customers had to press a call button or search for a staff member to unlock secured items—a process that often led to abandoned shopping carts or baskets due to delays in assistance.

According to a recent survey by data technology company Numerator, approximately one-quarter of shoppers tend to abandon purchases when encountering locked products.

Furthermore, many of these consumers end up spending their money online instead of completing their purchases in physical stores.

With this new measure, Walmart hopes to improve customer satisfaction and prevent sales losses caused by extended wait times.
