At the end of January, the United States asked Ukraine to receive flights carrying nationals from third countries that Washington intended to deport, the Washington Post revealed on Tuesday.
The request highlights the Trump administration’s wide-reaching efforts to accelerate deportations, in line with the president’s campaign promise to curb illegal immigration.
According to the newspaper, the proposal was delivered by a senior US diplomat who suggested sending these flights to Ukraine—despite the country being in the midst of a devastating war with Russia.
The request sparked concern due to significant logistical challenges, as most Ukrainian airports remain inoperable due to the conflict.

The Washington Post was unable to confirm how Kyiv responded to the request, but noted there were no indications the Ukrainian government seriously considered it.
The incident reflects the unconventional and controversial methods the Trump administration has employed to carry out deportations.
Among the most widely known examples is Washington’s deportation of Venezuelan nationals accused of belonging to the criminal gang Tren de Aragua. These individuals were flown to El Salvador and confined at the country’s Terrorism Confinement Center (Cecot).
Similar deportation flights have been documented to countries such as Costa Rica, Panama, Rwanda, and Uzbekistan.
Trump’s Approach

The US has also made similar deportation requests to other countries, including Georgia, as part of its broader mass deportation strategy.
Leaked documents obtained by The Washington Post indicate that Trump’s administration planned to carry out one million deportations during 2025—a record-breaking number in US history.
This goal reflects the administration’s aggressive approach to reducing the undocumented population within the country.
Trump’s deportation policies have long been a source of controversy, with human rights groups denouncing abusive treatment and due process violations against deported individuals.
Ukraine Caught Between Conflict and Deportation Demands
The request to Ukraine highlights a new dimension of this strategy—one that could spark further international backlash.
Ukraine’s potential involvement in such operations, while embroiled in an active war, raises ethical concerns about using a war-torn nation as a destination for deportees.
This still-developing situation opens broader questions about the future of US immigration policy and its impact on international relations.
