The first day of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, ended abruptly with the unexpected departure of President Donald Trump.

The U.S. president announced he would return to Washington immediately due to the escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran.

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt confirmed the news through social media.

«The president had a great day at the G7, during which he even signed a major trade deal with the United Kingdom and Prime Minister Keir Starmer.»

«Much was accomplished, but due to what is happening in the Middle East, President Trump will depart tonight after dinner with the heads of state,” Leavitt wrote at 5:30 p.m. local time.

The announcement surprised the leaders, who had just posed for the official G7 summit photo.

Minutes later, Trump addressed the media to justify his hasty decision.

«You probably see what I see, and I need to be back as soon as possible,” the president said.

The decision sparked discontent among several delegations, particularly the Mexican one.

President Claudia Sheinbaum had traveled to Kananaskis with the main goal of meeting with Trump to discuss a bilateral trade conflict.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also had meetings scheduled with the U.S. president that are now canceled.

The Middle East conflict dominated the day’s discussions among G7 leaders.

Early in the day, Trump communicated that Iran had shown signs of wanting to de-escalate the conflict with Israel, although the death toll had already surpassed 220 Iranians and 24 Israelis.

“They have to reach an agreement, and it’s painful for both sides, but I’d say Iran is not winning this war and should start talking immediately before it’s too late,” he stated.

He added: “Israel is doing very well.”

However, by the afternoon, his tone became much more threatening.

On his Truth Social network, Trump posted a direct warning to the Iranian population.

«Iran should have signed the ‘deal’ I told them to sign. What a shame and what a waste of human life. Plain and simple, IRAN CANNOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. I’ve said it again and again! Everyone should evacuate Tehran immediately!» he posted.

Meanwhile, on the economic front, the president made progress with several G7 leaders in key negotiations.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Trump announced the signing of a trade agreement that will eliminate certain tariffs for the UK.

«The deal is fair for both parties,» said Trump. «It will generate many jobs and investments.»

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also met with Trump.

“I addressed crucial issues with President Trump, from Ukraine to trade. On trade, we instructed our teams to accelerate their work toward a positive and fair agreement,” she posted on X, along with a photo of the meeting.

G7 summit host and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also announced progress with the U.S.

Carney stated that both countries agreed to accelerate trade negotiations to sign a treaty within 30 days.

Nonetheless, media attention focused on Trump’s early departure and his dramatic statements about Tehran.

The G7 summit will continue without the United States on its second day of work.

Do you think Trump’s decision to leave the summit was responsible, or does it jeopardize U.S. leadership on the international stage?
