Reciprocity measure between Peru and Mexico

According to reports, Peru will require visas for Mexican citizens, a direct response to the restrictions introduced by Mexico for Peruvians.
In an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru addressed the newly implemented measure.
They affirmed that it has been imposed «in response to the unilateral announcement by the Government of Mexico to impose the temporary visa requirement for Peruvian citizens wishing to visit their country.»
Therefore, «in accordance with the Principle of Reciprocity, the Government of Peru will impose the visa requirement on Mexican citizens wishing to visit our country.»
Growing tensions between both countries

This decision is part of a context of growing tensions between both countries, exacerbated by the imposition of restrictions by Mexico.
The Aztec nation argued that it had observed a significant increase in the number of Peruvians entering its territory, as detailed by the ‘Milenio’ news outlet.
Those individuals had inconsistencies in their documentation, raising concerns about the authenticity of their travel motivations.
The Peruvian Foreign Ministry lamented the Mexican measure, considering it detrimental to efforts to improve relations within the Pacific Alliance.
Who will not need a visa?

Especially concerning the facilitation of free movement of people between both countries, as detailed by the ‘CNN’ portal.
According to the aforementioned outlet, both countries have established exceptions to their new visa rules.
For instance, Mexican citizens holding a Schengen visa, a visa from the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, or Japan, will not require a visa to enter Peru.
Additionally, residents who hold permanent residency in these countries or in Pacific Alliance member states will also be exempt from the visa requirement.
Details of restrictions and exceptions

On the other hand, Mexico has specified that individuals holding visas from Schengen countries, Canada, the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom will be exempt from the new requirement.
Similarly, permanent residents of Chile and Colombia will not need to show their temporary visa as a mandatory requirement.
This situation marks a turning point in the relations between Peru and Mexico, stated the ‘Milenio’ news portal.
Thus, it has created uncertainty about the future of diplomatic and trade ties between these two Spanish-speaking countries.
Impact and resolution of differences

Furthermore, the new measure that Peru has decided to take against Mexicans was also reported through the popular social media platform X.
«Press Release: Peru will impose visas on Mexican citizens for short visits,» reads a post on the country’s Foreign Ministry profile.
Authorities from both nations are working to resolve these differences and seek solutions to the current conflicts.
They aim to benefit citizens and promote international cooperation, as noted by the ‘CNN‘ and ‘Milenio‘ portals. You can read the press release HERE.
