In response to the increase in immigration raids across various U.S. cities, attorney Aníbal Romero issued a warning to the immigrant community about how to act if agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) break the window of their vehicle to make an arrest.

In a video posted on TikTok, Romero advised that remaining silent is the primary legal defense.

“The most sacred right in the United States is the right to remain silent.”

So said the lawyer, who has spent years advising migrants facing aggressive operations by federal authorities.

In recent months, there have been multiple reports of ICE agents breaking into vehicles without presenting judicial warrants, generating fear and uncertainty within Latino communities.

Romero’s guidance has gained importance amid increasingly visible and controversial detention strategies.

Additionally, he made comments warning of a possible intensification of immigration policies in the US under the leadership of President Donald Trump.

Who has repeatedly expressed his commitment to stricter operations and increased deportations—even of people with valid visas.

What the lawyer says

Romero clarified that silence does not imply guilt or an admission of immigration status.

“The officer doesn’t know whether you have papers or not. They’ll detain you, but then the government will have to prove why they did it,” he explained.

He also urged the community not to unintentionally cooperate with immigration authorities. “Let’s not make Immigration’s job easier,” he insisted.

Finally, he warned the community to prepare for a hardening of immigration policies in the US. “We’re facing three and a half years of what will be nearly a war against migrants,” he said, and called for unity to confront potential abuses.

What comes next

Immigrant advocacy organizations have begun spreading more informational content via social media and community media outlets to prepare immigrants for raids and arbitrary detentions.

Legal guidance and awareness of one’s rights have become essential to surviving in the current political climate.

So emphasized attorney Romero.
