Montana mom’s last words before dying from eating sushi with morel mushrooms

A seemingly normal day in April of last year turned into a nightmare for a local couple.

Donna Ventura, a 64-year-old retired financial advisor, spent 12 agonizing days in the ICU at Bozeman Health after having lunch at the well-known sushi restaurant, Dave’s Sushi.

Less than two weeks after eating there, Donna passed away with her husband and son by her side.

Suffering from total renal and hepatic failure, Donna was put on a ventilator at Bozeman Health, where she fought for her life for 13 days after eating raw morel mushrooms.

In addition to immense physical pain, her husband Jon recounts Donna’s frustration at being unable to speak.

Jon describes how they gave her paper and a red marker so that Donna could express her needs.

He also said that despite his opposition, Donna refused a feeding tube.

Donna Ventura, 64, met a prolonged and painful death after consuming the meal of uncooked fungus from China.

Using a red magic marker on scraps of computer paper, Donna communicated with her husband Jon and their son Christopher.

«Some of the messages she wrote were: ‘I’m not sure I can go on much longer, how are we going to manage, I can’t stand the pain, can somebody clean my mouth. I love you,'» her husband recounts.

He continued, «And to our son, she wrote, ‘I love you, Mr. C.’ When you’re married for as long as I was, you can understand your partner’s body language and looks,” said Jon.

“The third or fourth time I talked to her about it I got the look that said, I’ve made my decision and I’m done, I’m not talking about this anymore,” he added.

Today, her husband Jon wears a necklace to keep her memory close. It’s their wedding rings fused together. They were married for nearly 35 years.

“I told my wife on her deathbed that I would hold those accountable for what they’ve done to her,” said Jon, according to KBZK.

It should be noted that Donna was one of the 51 people who became severely ill after consuming a special roll topped with raw morel mushrooms at Dave’s Sushi.

Tragically, she was one of two people who died as a result of the food poisoning.
