The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has stirred controversy with the opening of a new immigrant detention center in Miami County, Indiana.

The expansion of the state prison, located about 70 miles north of Indianapolis, has drawn scrutiny due to its name and a controversial post on social media.

The new facility, dubbed the “Speedway Slammer,” will hold up to 1,000 detained immigrants, according to a DHS announcement on Tuesday.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem explained that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will use the facility to confine “some of the worst illegal foreign criminals” arrested.

Controversy Over Detention Center in Indiana

Indiana, known as home to the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the IndyCar series, became entangled in the controversy when DHS published an image on its official X account showing a race car with the number 5—the same number driven by Mexican racer Pato O’Ward in the series.

The image showed the car speeding past a barbed wire fence. Many interpreted the image as promotional material for the detention center.

Efe reported that some believe the image was generated by artificial intelligence, which quickly fueled public backlash.

Both the Mexican driver and IndyCar officials expressed surprise over the use of the number 5, stating they were neither consulted nor informed about the post.

Social Media Controversy with IndyCar

IndyCar released a statement saying it was unaware of DHS’s plans and rejected the use of its intellectual property in connection with the controversial post.

Additionally, the choice of the name “Speedway Slammer” has drawn criticism due to its association with the town of Speedway, a suburb of Indianapolis.

The name has been seen by many as insensitive, given the city’s cultural significance in motorsports—especially its link to the Indianapolis 500, one of the most prestigious races in the IndyCar series.

Officials from Speedway clarified in a statement that DHS selected the name independently and without prior consultation.

Conclusion

The controversy has intensified the debate over the relationship between the federal government, immigration policies, and local cultural sensitivities.

This incident highlights how immigration enforcement policies can intersect with deeply rooted themes in popular culture—

At a time when tensions over the treatment of immigrants remain a divisive issue in American politics.
