The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reclassified a recall of chia seeds sold at Walmart.
It has now been categorized as having a higher risk of injury or death due to salmonella poisoning.
The recall of «Great Value Organic Black Chia Seeds 32 oz.» was first announced on May 13, according to the FDA website.
It was reclassified to «Class I,» the highest risk level, at the end of June, reported Fox Business.
Serious Health Risk from Contaminated Chia Seeds

A «Class I» recall is a situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death, says the FDA.
The recall extends to one batch of chia seeds, sold at Walmart stores across the United States, according to the FDA.
The affected products have lot numbers ending in «C018» and an expiration date of October 30, 2026.
«Natural Sourcing International is initiating a voluntary recall of one lot of Great Value Organic Black Chia Seeds 32 oz.»
Due to the potential presence of Salmonella,» said Natural Sourcing International in a statement on May 10.

The possibly contaminated chia seeds were sold at Walmart stores in Alabama, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida.
They were also sold in other locations in Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin, according to the FDA.
«Although no adverse events associated with the products have been reported to date, the products are being recalled out of an abundance of caution and because consumer safety is the company’s top priority.»
This was the statement from Natural Sourcing International.
Those who purchased the recalled chia seeds should dispose of them, said Natural Sourcing International.
The products will be replaced with proof of purchase, they said.
