Brian Dorsey was executed by lethal injection

Brian Dorsey, 52, was pronounced dead at 6:11 p.m. local Missouri time after a single-dose injection of the sedative pentobarbital at Bonne Terre State Prison.
This was reported in an email by Karen Pojmann, director of communications for the Missouri Department of Corrections, according to The Associated Press.
It was the first execution in Missouri this year, after four in 2023, and came hours after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Brian Dorsey’s final appeals.
He took a few deep breaths as the drug was injected, then several quick, shallow breaths.

At one point Dorsey lifted his head from the pillow and blinked hard. After several seconds, all movement stopped.
A spiritual advisor sitting next to the stretcher continued speaking. It wasn’t clear what he was saying as the room was soundproof.
In his final statement, Dorsey expressed remorse and sadness over the murders.
«Words cannot hold the just weight of my guilt and shame,» Dorsey said in the written statement.
He was convicted of murdering his cousin and her husband

Dorsey, 52, formerly of Jefferson City, was convicted of killing Sarah and Ben Bonnie on December 23, 2006, at their home near New Bloomfield.
Prosecutors said that earlier that day, Dorsey had called Sarah Bonnie to borrow money to pay off two drug dealers who were at her apartment.
Dorsey went to the Bonnie house that night they went to bed, Dorsey took a shotgun from the garage and killed them both before sexually assaulting Sarah Bonnie’s body, prosecutors said.
Police said Dorsey stole several items from the home and tried to pay off a drug debt with some of the stolen property.
Sarah Bonnie’s parents found the bodies

One day after the murders, Sarah Bonnie’s parents went to see the house after they didn’t show up for a family reunion.
They found the couple’s 4-year-old daughter on the couch watching television. She told her grandparents that her mother “won’t wake up.”
Dorsey’s execution had raised new concerns about Missouri’s single-drug protocol, which does not include any provision for the use of anesthetics.
Dorsey’s attorneys described him as obese, diabetic and a former intravenous drug user, which made it difficult to find a vein for the lethal injection.
How did the execution take place?

They thought a cutdown may be required because of his health issues. This involves making an incision and then using forceps to remove tissue from an interior vein, according to The Associated Press.
The federal lawsuit argued that without an anesthetic, Dorsey would be in so much pain that his religious freedom would be violated.
On Saturday, April 6, it was agreed that the state would take steps to reduce the risk of extreme pain. However, specific changes were not detailed.
Pojmann said no cutdown procedure was necessary for Dorsey. “It went smoothly,” he said. «No problems.»
