According to the EFE news agency, President Donald Trump’s administration has launched a sweeping legal offensive against doctors and medical centers involved in gender transition procedures for minors.

The U.S. Department of Justice confirmed it has sent more than 20 subpoenas to specialists and clinics, compelling them to hand over documentation and testify before federal authorities.

This federal investigation aims to gather information about alleged fraudulent practices or false statements related to gender-affirming treatments for minors.

Attorney General Pam Bondi stated in a press release that “medical professionals and organizations who mutilated minors in service of a twisted ideology will be held accountable by this Department of Justice.”

The government’s language reflects a radically opposed stance to the recommendations of much of the international medical community, which considers gender-affirming treatments necessary for the well-being of certain transgender minors.

From the very moment of his return to the White House in January, Trump made clear his intention to eliminate any official support for these medical practices.

Just one week after retaking office, the president signed an executive order stating that his administration “will not fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support so-called ‘transition’ of a minor from one gender to another.”

The order also instructs all federal agencies to strictly enforce any existing laws that prohibit or limit what the administration describes as “destructive” procedures.

Criticism of Gender Transition in Minors

Among the direct targets of the president’s criticism is the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), which the government accuses of having promoted “harm done to minors through chemical and surgical mutilation.”

In its official statement, the Department of Justice denies the “scientific integrity” of WPATH’s guidelines and standards of care, which are adopted by many hospitals and clinics in the United States and around the world.

This measure is part of a broader series of actions by the Trump administration to restrict the rights and access to healthcare of transgender individuals in the country.

Civil rights organizations have labeled the government’s strategy as a frontal attack on a historically vulnerable population already subject to high rates of discrimination.

Expected Legal and Social Impact

Legal experts warn that these subpoenas could set a dangerous precedent by subjecting medical practice, based on internationally recognized professional standards, to criminal investigation.

They also emphasize that the use of terms like “mutilation” or “fraud” is part of a political rhetoric aimed at rallying support among conservative and religious sectors.

The transgender rights movement in the United States views these actions as a significant setback to protections won over the past two decades.

Numerous human rights advocacy groups argue that the Trump administration is weaponizing the federal judicial system to intimidate doctors and discourage access to specialized medical care for transgender minors.

Response From Professionals and Activists

Meanwhile, several Republican-led states have passed laws in recent years to ban or severely restrict gender-affirming treatments for minors. These bans are facing multiple legal challenges.

The White House argues that these measures are necessary to protect minors from irreversible medical interventions and decisions they believe are made under ideological pressure.

However, major American medical associations, including the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, support gender-affirming care as an evidence-based approach to treating gender dysphoria in minors.

These organizations emphasize that gender-affirming care is not a single procedure but a supervised process that may include psychological therapy, hormone treatments, or, in certain carefully evaluated cases, surgical interventions.

National Debate on Gender Transition in Minors

For many civil rights advocates, the current legal offensive by the Trump administration aims not only to eliminate these medical practices but also to send a stigmatizing message against families and transgender minors nationwide.

The Department of Justice has not publicly specified which clinics or professionals have been subpoenaed but indicated that it expects to expand its investigation if evidence of potential federal crimes related to healthcare fraud or false statements is found.

The federal investigation is already creating concern among healthcare professionals, who fear that the threat of legal proceedings could deter transgender patients from seeking medical care.

Meanwhile, LGBTQ+ rights groups have vowed to challenge any measure that limits access to evidence-based medical care for transgender minors through legal avenues.
