A devastating earthquake, measuring 6.8 in magnitude, has left Morocco in a state of shock. The death toll has surpassed 2,000 and continues to rise.

Rescue teams, for their part, are struggling to reach the most remote and affected areas, which are covered in debris and rocks.

On Friday night, a historically powerful earthquake rocked the entire Moroccan territory, leaving the population stunned and prompting a state of emergency.

This quake, recorded as the most powerful in 120 years, triggered scenes of chaos throughout the nation. It forced people to abandon their homes and seek refuge in the streets.

As Moroccans were praying and working to aid the victims of last Friday’s earthquake, another tremor struck the nation.

A magnitude 3.9 aftershock jolted the Moroccans on Sunday, as they offered prayers for the victims of the most powerful earthquake the country has experienced in over a century.

Efforts to rescue survivors continued, with soldiers and workers delivering water and supplies to devastated mountain villages.

Authorities anticipate that the death toll will rise in the coming hours.

Eyewitnesses painted scenes of horror, with household items plummeting like rain, and buildings collapsing around them.

Similarly, there was structural damage in historic cities ill-equipped to handle such seismic force.

In the High Atlas, a mountainous region, devastation was widespread, with homes caving in on themselves and streets echoing with anguish and sorrow.

Mothers and fathers wept as rescue teams, donned in helmets, navigated through the debris to retrieve the deceased.

One survivor recalled the earthquake’s onset, saying, «Plates and tapestries began to fall like rain, and people were knocked off their feet.»

This account provides insight into the chaos that ensued during the earthquake, as citizens scrambled to find safety amidst an unexpectedly vast tragedy.

Mountain towns bore the brunt of the impact, given that many of their structures weren’t built to withstand such a powerful earthquake.

Stone and masonry walls turned into deadly hazards, entombing whole communities beneath heaps of debris.

The death toll, currently exceeding 2,000 people, is devastating, and, sadly, it’s expected to rise in the coming hours.

Debris and rocks covering the roads pose further challenges for the rescue teams working relentlessly to save lives.

Moroccan authorities have declared a state of emergency and mobilized every available resource to address this catastrophe.

Emergency shelters have been set up for those displaced, and medical staff and rescue teams have been dispatched from various regions of the country.

In Marrakech, the renowned Koutoubia Mosque, constructed in the 12th century, has sustained damage, though the full extent is not yet known.

Videos circulating on social media display damage to parts of the famed red wall, which is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

According to The Associated Press, at least 2,012 individuals have died, the majority in Marrakech and five provinces proximate to the earthquake’s epicenter.

Additionally, the Moroccan Ministry of the Interior reported another 2,059 injuries. Of those injured, 1,404 are in critical condition.

Morocco was working on Sunday to rescue survivors and offering prayers for the victims of the nation’s most powerful earthquake in over a century, as reported by AP.

“We felt such a strong shaking; it felt like the end of the world,” said Ayoub Toudite, a resident of Moulay Brahim. “Within ten seconds, everything had crumbled.”

Arnaud Fraisse mentioned that their group’s equipment was held up at the airport in Paris, awaiting approval from Morocco for entry.

“We understand the dire need to rescue people and search beneath the debris. People are trapped under the rubble, and we feel helpless as they perish,” she stated.
