Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum criticized actor Eduardo Verástegui after he made a controversial gesture at the CPAC conference in the United States.
During her morning press conference, Sheinbaum stated: «I don’t know if he truly believes in it or if it’s just his way of gaining attention, but he has an ultra-right-wing, highly conservative, racist, and classist discourse.»
She added: «However, I believe that in Mexico, it doesn’t have much traction, given the country’s history—one of strong liberalism.»
The controversial gesture—where Verástegui placed his hand over his heart and then extended it forward—has been widely compared to the Nazi salute, although he categorically denies the allegation.
Verástegui Criticized by President Claudia Sheinbaum
The National Electoral Institute (INE) recently approved the process to establish the Movimiento Viva México party, an initiative stemming from Verástegui’s failed attempt to gather enough signatures to run independently in Mexico’s 2024 presidential elections.
Sheinbaum emphasized that such rhetoric is rejected by the Mexican people, adding: «It is essential to keep exposing and discussing these matters because they need to be known.»
She reinforced her stance by stating: «Today, the people of Mexico have a deep awareness of history, and I find it hard to believe that such ideologies would gain traction in our country.»
Eduardo Verástegui, who rose to fame in the 1990s for his roles in telenovelas such as Soñadoras, Tres Mujeres, and Alma Rebelde, has shifted his career toward advocating against abortion and LGBTQ+ rights.
Sheinbaum Rejects Extremist Ties

In Mexico, Eduardo Verástegui has also stirred controversy due to his close ties with former U.S. President Donald Trump, helping him connect with Hispanic communities.
The actor’s gesture—likened to those made by figures like Elon Musk and Steve Bannon—continues to fuel debate over the influence of ultra-conservative ideologies in Mexican politics and society.
This incident has ignited heated discussions in both political circles and civil society, exposing the ongoing tensions between conservative ideologies and Mexico’s deeply rooted liberal tradition.
Experts in political communication warn that these events could reshape the electoral landscape, prompting the public to demand greater transparency and a commitment to democratic values and inclusion.
This controversy also raises critical questions about the limits of free speech and the potential impact of extremist rhetoric on Mexico’s social and political fabric.
The episode highlights the urgent need for constructive dialogue, where ethical responsibility and respect for diversity are fundamental pillars of Mexico’s democratic coexistence.
