  • Alligator meme used to promote migrant prison in Florida.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sparked controversy this past weekend by sharing an AI-generated meme on social media to promote the upcoming migrant prison “Alligator Alcatraz” in the Everglades.

The image shows alligators wearing hats with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) logo, alongside the caption “Coming Soon!” referring to the opening of the controversial detention center under construction in South Florida.

The post sparked mixed reactions: while some users praised the campaign’s aggressive tone, others condemned it as a veiled threat and a form of official propaganda aimed at intimidation.

Critics on social media described it as “psychological warfare disguised as meme culture,” arguing that it trivializes the violence and suffering of the thousands of migrants who could be detained in such facilities.

The controversial project, already known as “Alligator Alcatraz,” involves an annual investment of approximately $450 million and is located in a swampy area of the Everglades, famous for its dangerous wildlife.

According to Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, one of the main proponents of the idea and an ally of President Donald Trump, the location will reduce security costs thanks to the natural presence of alligators and pythons.

The New York Times recalled that Trump, during his first term, had already expressed his desire to build moats filled with alligators and snakes.

This was intended to stop migration along the U.S.-Mexico border.

At the time, the president urged authorities to use black-painted barbed wire to make it look more intimidating.

The prison in the Everglades is part of a broader effort by his administration to expand migrant detention capacity.

And to increase pressure on local governments to cooperate in arrests and deportations.

This was reported by CNN’s website.

Part of a Broader Strategy to Toughen Migrant Detention

“Alligator Alcatraz” is not the only controversial measure from the Trump administration to deal with undocumented migrants.

Earlier this year, the president signed a memorandum to enable the prison at the U.S. naval base in Guantánamo, Cuba, as a detention center for migrants accused of crimes who cannot be immediately deported.

The government’s goal is to add about 5,000 additional beds to the migrant detention system, amid criticism over inhumane treatment of undocumented individuals and the use of fear tactics to curb irregular migration.

Local authorities, such as Miami-Dade County Mayor Danielle Levine Cava, have warned that more studies on the Everglades terrain are still needed before moving forward with construction, leaving questions open about the actual timeline for the new prison’s opening.
