According to EFE, U.S. President Donald Trump raised diplomatic tensions by warning that there would be “serious consequences” if Russian President Vladimir Putin does not end the war in Ukraine after their summit this Friday in Alaska.
The statement was made Wednesday during an event at the Kennedy Center in Washington, where Trump took questions from the press.
“Yes, there will be very serious consequences,” the president said when asked about possible measures if Putin refuses to halt the attacks.
The summit will take place at a military base in Anchorage, Alaska, and is expected to be the most significant meeting between the two leaders since Trump returned to the presidency.

In recent months, Trump has expressed frustration at the Kremlin’s refusal to stop bombing Ukrainian territory.
The United States and its Western allies have maintained a wide range of sanctions against Russia, hitting key sectors of its economy.
Trump has hinted he is ready to impose additional measures if there is no progress in dialogue.
Although he acknowledged he has not yet convinced Putin to stop attacks on civilians, Trump insists his goal is to “end the war.”
Possible Trilateral Meeting with Zelensky

The U.S. president said that if the meeting with Putin goes well, he will immediately propose a second summit that includes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Zelensky has reiterated that Ukraine cannot be excluded from any peace negotiations and has stressed the need to participate directly in any agreement.
“If the first one goes well, we will have a second meeting quickly. I would like to do it almost immediately. It will be a meeting between President Putin, President Zelensky, and me,” Trump stated.
The president noted that such a second meeting would carry even greater diplomatic weight than the initial one.
Previous contacts and international coordination

Trump revealed that he had a “very good” call with Zelensky and European leaders before his summit with Putin.
The purpose of that communication was to coordinate positions and strengthen international pressure on Moscow.
The U.S. president pledged to brief them on the outcome of the meeting and to maintain coordination after the encounter.
White House sources said the administration is seeking a united front with the European Union to advance any progress that may emerge from the Alaska summit.
Historical context of Trump-Putin meetings
Putin has not met with a U.S. leader since June 2021, when he met with Joe Biden in Geneva, Switzerland.
The last time the Russian president saw Trump was in June 2019 during the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan, in the Republican’s first term.
This Friday’s meeting marks a return to face-to-face diplomacy between the two powers amid a conflict that has been escalating for more than two years.
International politics experts note that the meeting will be closely watched by the global community due to its potential repercussions for European security.
Tensions and possible scenarios
The war in Ukraine continues to leave casualties and destruction, while mediation efforts have faced multiple obstacles.
Economic sanctions and diplomatic pressure have so far failed to stop the Russian attacks.
Analysts warn that if the Alaska summit fails, the United States and its allies are likely to increase sanctions and further Moscow’s international isolation.
For its part, Ukraine maintains its demand to recover all occupied territories and for Russia to withdraw its troops as a condition for any agreement.
