A group of 21 Democratic senators has expressed opposition to the reactivation of detaining migrant families with children in the U.S.

The legislators sent a letter to the White House demanding that Donald Trump’s administration reverse this measure.

Senator Alex Padilla, leader of the Subcommittee on Immigration, spearheaded the initiative in Congress.

In the letter, they warned that this practice does not deter migration and only causes suffering.

Studies have shown that detaining minors poses a high risk of psychological harm.

The Democrats described the policy as costly, ineffective, and harmful to public funds.

President Joe Biden suspended this practice at the beginning of his term and closed the Dilley center.

In early March, the company CoreCivic reached an agreement with ICE to reopen the detention center.

In addition to Dilley, the Karnes center in Texas has also begun to receive detained migrant families.
