According to EFE, President Donald Trump came to the defense of actress Sydney Sweeney after she starred in a controversial ad for the clothing brand American Eagle.
The campaign has stirred debate on social media and in the press for what some interpreted as a nod to white supremacy.
The commercial plays on the homophone between “jeans” and “genes,” which many saw as an exaltation of the actress’s physical traits.
“Sydney Sweeney, registered as a Republican, has the ‘MOST POPULAR’ ad out there. It’s for American Eagle, and the jeans are ‘flying off the shelves.’ Go get ’em, Sydney!” Trump wrote on his social network Truth Social on Monday.

The president not only praised Sweeney’s participation in the ad but also highlighted her political affiliation.
The controversy erupted over the commercial’s main message: “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans… and she got them from AE.”
Although American Eagle clarified that it referred to denim pants, many users pointed out that the double meaning seemed to suggest that the “good genes” belonged to white, blonde people like Sweeney.
The actress, known for her roles in series such as Euphoria and The White Lotus, has not publicly responded to the controversy.
American Eagle Denies Racist Message

American Eagle responded quickly through Instagram.
“It’s always been about jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We’ll keep celebrating how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, in their own way. Great jeans look good on everyone,” the company wrote.
Despite this clarification, the debate continued online, with users divided between those supporting the actress and those who believe the ad reinforces racial stereotypes.
Trump didn’t stop at backing Sweeney.
Trump Criticizes Taylor Swift and Jaguar

He also used the opportunity to criticize other entertainment figures and brands he views as aligned with a progressive agenda.
In the same Truth Social post, the president lashed out at the car brand Jaguar, accusing it of having a “stupid and very ‘woke’” commercial.
Without giving more details about the ad’s content, Trump stated, “Nobody wants that anymore.”
He then directly targeted singer Taylor Swift, declaring that he “hates” her and that ever since she spoke out against him, she “hasn’t been fashionable anymore.”
Trump’s Support for Sweeney Seen as Electoral Strategy
Tensions between Trump and Swift are not new.
The singer voiced her support for Kamala Harris, then the Democratic vice-presidential candidate, during the 2024 campaign.
That endorsement was interpreted by Trump as a betrayal of the “true American spirit.”
Since then, he has repeatedly attacked the artist at rallies, in interviews, and on social media.
