Former President Donald Trump asked the United States Supreme Court on Wednesday to review a ruling that bars him from the Colorado ballot, according to the AP.

This sets the stage for a dispute over whether a constitutional provision that prohibits anyone «who has engaged in any insurrection» will end his political career.

Last month’s ruling marked the first time in history that this provision was used to keep a presidential candidate’s name off the ballot.

According to the Colorado Supreme Court, Trump cannot appear on the ballot due to his alleged involvement in the events on Jan. 6.

Now Trump asks the Supreme Court to reverse this decision, something the Colorado Republican Party had also requested.

The party’s action led the state to suspend the measure, temporarily keeping the former president on the ballot.

Spokesperson Steven Cheung explained Trump’s lawyers position.

Trump’s legal challenge in Colorado

Trump is urging the Supreme Court to issue a «clear, summary rejection of the Colorado Supreme Court’s wrongful ruling.»

Cheung added that they consider this action an «anti-American and unconstitutional act of election interference.»

Cheung did not spare criticism for the «Crooked Joe Biden’s comrades,» accusing them of trying to exclude Trump from the ballot.

He called it another obsessive effort by the Democrats to violate the Constitution and voters’ rights, according to the Daily Mail.

Trump asks the Supreme Court to intervene

Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold urged the United States Supreme Court to quickly address Trump’s appeal.

She pointed out that there are «a series of important deadlines» on the state’s electoral calendar.

Griswold stated that resolving the matter is crucial given the proximity of these dates, according to The New York Post.

The Secretary of State of Maine has also stated that Trump cannot appear on that state’s ballot.

The Republican Party’s crucial appeal

Michigan determined that Trump can remain on their ballot, while Louisiana faces a similar lawsuit related to the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.

Colorado may not be decisive in the general election, and the current decision only affects the Republican primaries, however it’s still a crucial matter.

The Supreme Court’s decision could set a significant precedent for other states with similar intentions, according to The Wall Street Journal.

For now, the appeal by the Colorado Republican Party has succeeded keeping Trump’s name on the state’s ballot for now.

Trump remains on the ballot in Colorado

The Colorado Secretary of State announced that the former president will remain on the ballot until January 5, the printing date.

This will remain the case unless the U.S. Supreme Court upholds the lower court’s ruling or rejects the appeal.

In an unexpected turn of events, the Colorado Supreme Court chose to suspend its ruling until January 4, according to the Daily Mail.

This allows time for the appeal process, as Donald Trump’s political fate hangs in the balance.
