Hurricane Helene has left a trail of devastation and death in the southeastern United States.

To date, at least 115 people have lost their lives and more than 600 remain missing in six states.

These include Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

In Asheville, North Carolina, one of the hardest hit places, rescue teams continue the search for survivors.

MORE THAN 200 ROADS CLOSED

In that town alone, at least 35 people have died after Helene struck, which arrived in the region weakened as a tropical storm.

The intense rains destroyed entire neighborhoods and submerged businesses under water, closing 289 roads in the state, according to Efe.

Asheville Mayor Esther Manheimer declared that the city is completely isolated due to downed power poles and cell towers, preventing communication with residents.

In an interview with CNN, he added that there is no estimated date for the restoration of electricity.

In addition, he assured that the community remains in a state of shock, facing an urgent need for water and food.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper visited the affected area today and described the situation as “incredible devastation,” while recovery efforts continue.

FEMA noted that the accumulated rainfall totals were «absolutely extreme.»

Also, a public health emergency was declared in much of the Southeast due to threats to drinking water systems.

STORM OF THOSE THAT MAKE HISTORY

President Joe Biden, expressed his solidarity with those affected and noted that Helene is a «storm that makes history.»

Biden plans to visit the region in the coming days to assess the damage and coordinate more federal aid.

Four days after the impact of Helene, more than 1.5 million people remain without electricity in the affected states.

The situation remains critical with flooding and mudslides causing 38 counties in North Carolina to request major disaster status.
