The conception of death has been a central theme in the cultures of America throughout history. Many experts in anthropology say that Homo sapiens had ideas about it.
From ancient civilizations to contemporary indigenous societies, people have varied significantly in their perception of death and have woven these beliefs with deep philosophies and spiritualities.
In this diverse context, we find a multitude of myths, legends, and traditions that explore the mystery of life after death.
The pre-Columbian cultures of America, such as the Aztecs and Mayas, considered death as a transition to a new stage of existence.
Beliefs about Death

They ritualized and intricately linked sacrifices with the belief in the need to feed the gods and ensure survival in the afterlife.
For their worldviews, the duality between life and death was fundamental, and they conceived of death as a natural part of the life cycle.
In contrast, the indigenous societies of North America, such as the Chochones, had their own interpretations of death.
In many cases, they considered that death was reversible or that the spirit could continue its journey in the world of spirits.
A Permanent Theme

Mythical narratives and legends conveyed important teachings about respect for life and understanding death.
In contemporary America, these ancestral traditions often coexist with the influences of Western religions and philosophies.
The vision of death remains a rich and complex topic in the diverse cultures of the continent, reflecting the interaction between the ancient and the modern in the understanding of life and death.
Now we will explore an example that illustrates one of the many unique perspectives on death in the cultures of America.
Legend of the Wolf and the Coyote

In several of the myths about the origins of death, a discussion takes place between two beings; in this case, it is a story of the Chochone Indians, inhabitants of the western plains of North America.
In ancient times the two most relevant figures were the Wolf and the Coyote, and it was the latter who always tried to disrupt the plans of the other.
One day the Wolf said: when a person dies, life can be restored by shooting an arrow over the earth beneath them.
But the Coyote quickly replied that he did not think it was a good idea, as if all the people came back to life, there would eventually be too many in the world.
The Coyote Loses His Offspring

The Wolf accepted his reasoning, but decided that the Coyote’s son should be the first to die, and his wish caused the boy’s death.
Desolate, the Coyote went to see him and, telling him what had happened, reminded him of his words: that people could be revived by shooting an arrow beneath them.
But the Wolf responded with the Coyote’s argument «as you said and I have agreed, man has to die, if not, they could not all be on the earth.» Since then, that has been the case.
