A total of 18,291 migrants, mostly Venezuelans, returned to South America between January and July 2025, according to figures released by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The report, presented in Tegucigalpa, shows that 96% of those who returned were Venezuelans and 4% Colombians, reflecting a reverse migration trend driven by measures adopted in various transit countries.

According to Ismael Cruceta, head of the IOM Program Support Unit, this shift in dynamics is partly due to adjustments regional governments have implemented to address the migration crisis.

At the same time, Honduras recorded the entry of 21,617 people in transit, mainly Cubans, who are trying to reach the United States.

Migrants in Honduras: Return Figures

The IOM document details that returns heading south were variable: 196 people in January, 4,641 in February, 1,225 in March, 3,670 in April, 4,395 in May, 2,528 in June, and 1,636 in July.

These figures confirm that migratory pressure continues, with peaks depending on political, economic, and security factors in countries of origin and transit.

Migrants report that their most urgent needs are food, hygiene, and safe places to rest, though many also request legal assistance, especially those who lost documents.

The study shows that of those migrants who entered Honduras on their way north, 83% were Cubans, 5% Ecuadorians, 3% Chinese, and the rest of other nationalities.

Variable Migration Flows in the Region

The predominant profile is young men between 18 and 35, many traveling alone, which increases their vulnerability.

The IOM highlights that 55.78% of migrants move in search of jobs and better living conditions, while 32.06% migrate to reunite with their families.

The report also reveals that 20,362 Hondurans returned to their country during the same period, mostly from the United States and Mexico.

Cubans Lead the Way Through Honduras

Of those migrants returning, 73% came back from the United States and 23% from Mexico, highlighting the scale of the phenomenon in Honduras itself.

The IOM stresses the need to strengthen international cooperation to provide humanitarian assistance regardless of migratory status, ensuring dignified conditions for all people on the move.
