According to Monroe County Police Chief Troy Goodnough, the tragic incident occurred around 3 p.m. last Saturday.
In the midst of the festivities, a 66-year-old woman, whose identity has not been revealed by authorities, lost control of her vehicle.
She crashed it into the yacht club building, unleashing a chaotic and horrifying scene.
The two young siblings, aged 8 and 5, who were enjoying the celebration, tragically lost their lives at the scene, while several other partygoers were injured to varying degrees.
Several children were injured in the crash

Emergency services described the scene as overwhelming, with emotions running high among those who witnessed the accident and those directly affected by its consequences.
Three children and six adults were quickly transported to nearby hospitals, some in critical condition, according to The Associated Press.
Others received medical treatment at the scene.
Some of the injured were transported by ambulances or helicopters, while others arrived by private means.
The accident was caused by a drunk driver

The driver of the vehicle, allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, was arrested at the scene, according to The Associated Press.
She faces charges of reckless driving resulting in the deaths of two people.
Although her identity has not been released, authorities indicate she is cooperating with police.
It is likely that additional charges will be brought against her as the investigation progresses.
A community in pain

This tragic incident has left the Berlin Township community shocked and in mourning, as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances that led to this terrible loss of life.
Amid the pain and shock, questions are being raised about safety at public events and the risks of irresponsible alcohol consumption while driving.
In a related note, a driver identified as Cynthia Phelps was involved in a similar tragic incident on April 17 in Las Vegas.
According to police reports obtained by 8 News Now, Phelps allegedly drove the wrong way and hit five people at a bus stop, killing two of them.

This incident occurred while Phelps was under the influence of illicit substances. The incident took place around 7:40 p.m. on Boulder Highway.
Multiple calls to 911 alerted the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police to the incident.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a white sedan with severe front-end damage parked on the sidewalk next to the bus stop.
This vehicle was registered to Cynthia Phelps, 64, who was in the driver’s seat when authorities arrived.
