Sandra Téllez was arrested in the U.S. after years on the run.
The Mexican government will request the extradition of Sandra Lucía Téllez Nieves, a partner of the ABC Daycare in Hermosillo, Sonora, where 49 infants died in a fire in 2009.
This was confirmed on Monday by President Claudia Sheinbaum during her morning press conference, following news of Téllez’s recent arrest in the United States.
As reported by EFE.

“Yes, of course we must request the extradition,” declared Sheinbaum, although she clarified she was not certain whether the request had already been formally filed by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).
Sandra Téllez Nieves’s capture was made public by relatives of the victims.
They are demanding that the Mexican government do everything necessary to bring her back and prosecute her.
The organization Manos Unidas por Nuestros Niños published an open letter urging the Mexican state to act firmly and not allow political asylum to be granted.

The parents of the deceased children have denounced that a U.S. law firm is processing a political asylum request on Téllez’s behalf, arguing that she faces “political persecution” in Mexico.
Sandra Téllez was sentenced in 2016 to nearly 29 years in prison, but her sentence was reduced to 5 years and 7 months after several appeals.
An arrest warrant had been in effect since 2022, but she had remained a fugitive from Mexican justice.
According to the families, the reduction of the sentence and failure to enforce arrest warrants further highlight the pattern of impunity surrounding the case for over 15 years.
The Tragedy That Marked Mexico
On June 5, 2009, a fire that began in a warehouse of the state government’s Finance Department spread to the ABC Daycare, which was subcontracted by the IMSS (Mexican Social Security Institute). Forty-nine infants—25 girls and 24 boys—died, and more than 70 others were left with burns and lasting physical and emotional trauma.
The daycare operated without complying with safety standards: emergency exits were blocked, and the facility had serious structural deficiencies.
Although more than 20 officials were named as responsible, no one was convicted, and families continue to denounce ongoing impunity.
The victims and their parents continue to fight for justice. Now, with the arrest of Sandra Téllez Nieves, they demand there be no further delays in her legal proceedings.
