In an unexpected twist in the case of Madeline Soto’s tragic murder, Stephan Sterns opened up about the girl’s disappearance.

In an interview for WFTV, the mother’s boyfriend confessed that he was desperate because he had no information about Madeline.

At the same time, he stressed that he was in a «living a nightmare» since the teen disappeared on the morning of Monday, February 26.

«It’s hard not to blame myself. I dropped her off [at school] early, I could have waited longer. She looked okay she was walking towards the school,» he revealed to the outlet.

Sterns’ words came to light before police made the devastating announcement that she had been found deceased.

«I went on with my day. We don’t know where she could be, and we’re scared,» said Sterns, who looked sad as he spoke.

«I just want her home. It just keeps coming in waves, reality keeps hitting,» said the boyfriend of Madeline’s mother.

At first, he said that he left Soto at the entrance to her school. However, cameras caught him leaving her in a church parking lot.

‘We don’t know if she’s safe’

Sterns’ statements have added a new level of intrigue to this case, which had already captured the public’s attention.

Before the evidence that incriminated him was revealed, the Stephan Sterns seemed distressed about the missing girl.

«We don’t know where she is, we don’t know if she is safe. It’s a living nightmare. I just wanna wake up,» Sterns said.

At the same time, he declared that Jennifer Soto — Madeline’s mother — was calmer than him, because she is «a lot stronger» and was handling it well.
