Hearing the word ‘cancer’ is scary, and immediately people were worried his life was at risk.

But is this the case with singer Eduin Caz’s cancer?

According to the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), Barrett’s esophagus is a condition where the esophageal lining changes.

The cause of this condition is believed to be chronic inflammation from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Although most Barrett’s esophagus patients will not develop cancer, unfortunately, it seems the Grupo Firme singer was not so lucky.

According to ASGE, both medication and surgery can manage GERD symptoms.

However, neither can reverse Barrett’s esophagus or eliminate the cancer risk.

Fortunately, there was a treatment for Eduin Caz’s cancer.

These treatments involve special chemicals (photodynamic therapy), the use of light, heat and freezing.

It’s important to note that lifestyle changes can improve GERD symptoms.

This could be the foundation of Barrett’s esophagus, the condition that affected Grupo Firme’s lead singer, Eduin Caz.

It’s advised to maintain a healthy weight and avoid food and drinks causing heartburn.

It’s also recommended to avoid smoking and, to sleep with your head elevated. Eduin turned 29 last July, so he has a good chance of recovery.

Risk factors

Lastly, according to the Mayo Clinic, there are several factors that increase the risk of Barrett’s esophagus.

These include: family history, being male and white, age, chronic heartburn and acid reflux, along with smoking and being overweight.

It’s worth noting that people with Barrett’s esophagus, like Eduin Caz, have a higher risk of esophageal cancer.

The good news is that this risk is small, even in people with precancerous changes in the esophagus cells.
