Hundreds of international students with degrees, jobs, and valid work permits have seen their legal status in the United States revoked within days.
This comes amid a new immigration crackdown by the administration of President Donald Trump.
One of the most recent cases involves a young graduate from Boston University, who traveled from across the world to pursue a master’s degree in Finance.
After completing his studies, he was hired as a quantitative analyst and had just received his work authorization.

However, his situation changed dramatically after receiving an email showing that his student visa had been marked as “terminated” in the federal database.
«Over time, you just start feeling less welcome in this country.»
That’s what the student said, who requested anonymity out of fear of retaliation.

According to immigration attorneys, at least 1,000 international students have lost their legal status since January, when Trump took office.
Some, like attorney Charles Kuck in Atlanta, are representing dozens of affected individuals now facing potential deportation.
“ICE seems to be out of control,” Kuck stated.
Allegations suggest the government is using artificial intelligence to cross-check student records with criminal, civil, and immigration databases.
According to Kuck, “if the system detects something, a visa revocation is issued automatically.”
The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to CBS News inquiries about the use of AI in these processes.

Attorney Cassie Cai, based in Los Angeles, said her clients are living in fear.
“Many have changed their addresses because they know ICE could come to deport them. They have good reason to be afraid,” she explained.
The crackdown also appears to coincide with increased retaliation against international students who have participated in pro-Palestinian protests, which has raised concerns on campuses across the country.
Universities such as MIT, Stanford, and Columbia host large communities of international students, many of whom pay full tuition and are vital to the financial health of academic institutions.
Repercussions in the United States
“Without a doubt, this could harm innovation in the United States in the long run,” said the BU graduate.
“It affects the world’s perception of what this country stands for in terms of technology, science, and openness.”
While some students choose to stay and fight, the graduate has decided to leave.
“I want to build a career, and this is my best moment,” he said. “If I don’t start now, when will I?”
