Since Donald Trump’s return to the presidency, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has ramped up its activities, registering nearly 33,000 immigrant detentions in the first 50 days of his term.

According to senior officials at the Department of Homeland Security, this number is close to surpassing the total arrests made in the last fiscal year under Joe Biden’s administration.

During the period from January 20 to March 10, ICE conducted 32,809 detentions, of which 14,111 were convicted criminals, 9,980 had pending criminal charges, and 8,718 were individuals with other immigration infractions.

Despite this crackdown, the agency is facing a space crisis, with its detention centers operating at the limits of their capacity.

A senior ICE official warned that this situation further complicates the execution of arrests and detentions.

«We are at the limit. We’re at 47,600,» said the senior ICE official, adding that the agency is trying to increase its detention space.

ICE’s detention space is approximately at 120%, according to internal data shared with CNN.

Pressure from the White House to increase arrests has generated internal tensions within ICE, with differences among its officials on how to handle the situation.

Criticism has also arisen regarding the previous administration. Patrick J. Lyons, an ICE official, accused the previous administration of manipulating arrest data by including incidents that did not result in immigration law enforcement actions.

However, he did not provide concrete evidence for this claim.

In fiscal year 2024, ICE made 33,243 arrests within the community. However, the agency has not disclosed how many of the recent detentions correspond to this type nor how many individuals have been deported since Trump took office.

The increase in arrests reflects a tightening of immigration policy under the new administration, while ICE faces logistical and political challenges to sustain its strategy.
