Hot air balloon accident in Zacatecas leaves one dead and two injured
This is the second fatal balloon-related incident in the country in just over a year, prompting renewed calls to strengthen regulation and oversight of such festivals.
According to preliminary reports, the accident occurred when the basket of one of the balloons caught fire while still near the ground.
Despite the flames, the balloon began to ascend with at least one person still aboard, who attempted to avoid the fire by clinging to an external rope.
As highlighted by CNN’s news portal.
Moments later, this individual fell from a considerable height and died from the impact. Two others were injured during the incident.
Prosecutor’s office launches investigation
The Zacatecas State Attorney General’s Office confirmed that an official investigation has been opened into multiple crimes and that two individuals allegedly responsible for organizing the festival have already been identified. They reportedly fled the scene after the accident.
Authorities have not ruled out pressing criminal charges.
This incident renews public concern over safety at aerial festivals. In 2023, a similar incident in the State of Mexico left two people dead and one injured after another hot air balloon caught fire.
Investigators are working to determine whether there was negligence in the event’s operation, a lack of emergency measures, or violations of aviation regulations.
