In the middle of the task, Yener Ramírez Miranda’s life was taken from him on a street in Long Beach, California.

This when he was caught in a confrontation between gangs.

The 37-year-old Guatemalan was known throughout the community as «El hombre del maíz.»

Yener Ramírez Miranda receives a fatal shot

At just 14 years old, he spent each day hauling a cart attached to his bicycle to sell corn in the area.

While many may not have known his name, they admired his efforts to provide for his family.

On the afternoon of March 20th, bullets caught him off guard on the 100 block of East Eagle Street as he tended to two customers.

He was the sole victim, left lying in the middle of the street with a wound to his back.

The Guatemalan worked as a street vendor

No one dared to aid or move him until officers from the Long Beach Police Department approached the scene and transported him to the hospital, where he passed away minutes later.

«Detectives believe the victim may not have had any interaction with any of the suspects at the time of the shooting,» the police said in a statement.

According to preliminary investigations, «multiple unknown suspects were present on the man’s block when at least one person fired multiple shots.»

«One of which struck the vendor in the upper body. He succumbed to his wound at a local hospital,» the statement reads.

He was in the wrong place at the wrong time

The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, and authorities urge anyone with information to contact Detectives Michael Hubbard, Jesús Espinoza, or Alfredo Chairez at 562-570-7244.

Identifying the perpetrators is a priority for the detectives to prevent further harm to any other families.

The rumor of his murder sparked outrage among neighbors and street vendors.

They ask for help with funeral expenses

«Unfortunately, a loving father who worked tirelessly to support his family as a street vendor was shot and killed,» wrote his friend José Fernández.

«‘The Corn Man’ managed to captivate the community east of Long Beach with his work,» explained Fernández, who, understanding the family’s emotional and financial hardship, is seeking ways to assist them.

Yener was described as an enthusiastic soccer player, a collaborator with everyone, and extremely hardworking.

He devoted himself to his two children and his wife, with whom he lived in Wilmington.

Who was responsible?

In honor of his memory, neighbors, friends, and family have organized several vigils and erected a monument near where he lost his life.

To assist his family with funeral expenses, two events have been organized.

One will take place on April 30th on Eagle Street, and the other will be held on April 7th in his native Guatemala.

Additionally, a GoFundMe account has been set up.
