Gloria Estefan on Red Table Talk: «I felt ashamed»

Nearly two years ago, on the show Red Table Talk, Gloria Estefan told a story that surprised her fans — she shared how her daughter told her she was a lesbian.

«I had my first sexual experience with a woman, and two weeks later with a man,» Emily Estefan said.

Emily had come to believe that something was wrong with her: «I felt ashamed,» she revealed, and she even asked her parents if it was possible that she was gay.

Emily was surprised when Gloria told her that only she could discover the answer.

On the same show, Emily disclosed something that many found hard to believe.

She said that her famous mother, after learning that she had a girlfriend, didn’t have the best reaction.

Supposedly, Gloria Estefan told her not to share this information with her grandmother.

Otherwise, according to the singer, the elderly woman might be so shocked that Emily’s hands would be «stained with her blood.»

Gloria Estefan contradicts her daughter

However, Gloria Estefan has a different version of events. She says she wanted Emily to introduce her girlfriend as a friend.

This way, her grandmother would gradually become accustomed to the young woman’s presence and grow fond of her. Did the singer really think that?

«In my mind, I could only think that if she told my mother and something happened to her, Emily would feel guilty forever.»

On the other hand, the actress also stated that she didn’t want her daughter to associate her sexuality with her grandmother getting sick.

Did Emily forgive her mother?

Gloria Estefan’s daughter said that she understood her mother’s concern, but she didn’t justify it.

«I was falling apart. I tried to be strong and act as if I didn’t care, but my life came to a standstill.»

According to El Mundo, Emily didn’t care about what others said, only her family.

«My grandmother was an elderly, sick woman, and I wondered if my being gay could end up killing someone,» she concluded.
