President Donald Trump declared on Friday that a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip could be “close,” stating that his administration believes an agreement will be reached “within the next week.”

The statement came as he spoke to reporters at the White House amid an escalation of violence that has left thousands dead and triggered a severe humanitarian crisis.

Trump described the situation in Gaza as “terrible” and said he had spoken with people involved in the negotiations, though he did not specify with whom or what details were discussed.

“We believe that within the next week, we’ll achieve a ceasefire,” he stated. The president also highlighted the role of the United States in providing humanitarian assistance: “We’re supplying, as you know, a lot of money and food to that area.” Trump did not offer specifics on the terms or mechanisms of a potential agreement, leaving open questions about the structure of the truce and each side’s concessions.

French President Emmanuel Macron stated this week that he perceived Trump as “very determined, very resolute” in securing a ceasefire in Gaza.

“I believe his commitment is essential in this matter,” Macron said from Brussels, emphasizing the importance of international diplomacy in halting the violence.

Macron also suggested that Trump’s team is engaged in ongoing talks with key players to unblock negotiations.

Current Situation in Gaza

The war in Gaza intensified after Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and has continued intermittently with periods of broken truces and renewed military offensives.

The latest wave of violence has claimed thousands of lives.

Destroying homes, hospitals, and essential services in the Palestinian enclave.

The Israeli Embassy in Washington did not respond to requests for comment on the possibility of an agreement.

Costs of Conflict with Iran

Meanwhile, Israel faces the financial fallout from its recent 12-day war with Iran, estimated at 10 billion shekels (about $3 billion).

Israel’s Ministry of Finance explained that funds will go toward repairing buildings hit by missiles and compensating local businesses affected by the conflict.

Furthermore, the scale of the damage highlights Iran’s capacity to breach Israeli defenses during nearly two weeks of exchanges of fire.

Outlook

Trump’s announcement raises hopes for potential de-escalation in Gaza in the coming days.

However, the lack of concrete details and the complexity of mutual demands between Israel and Hamas keep the future of negotiations uncertain.

For millions of civilians trapped in the violence, any signal of a ceasefire in Gaza offers urgent hope.
