América in Crisis: Three Straight Eliminations and No Club World Cup Ticket

After winning three consecutive Liga MX titles, Club América is enduring a 2025 to forget.
In less than two months, Las Águilas have been knocked out of three major competitions, culminating in a painful loss to LAFC that denied them a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup.
From the Top to a Free Fall
FIFA gave América a second chance: to compete in an international play-in for the spot vacated by León.
But the team failed to seize it.
They lost 2-1 to LAFC in extra time in a match held in California, with a direct ticket to the 2025 Club World Cup on the line.
Three Straight Setbacks
Under head coach André Jardine, the azulcrema side has suffered a string of disappointments:
- Eliminated by Cruz Azul in the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinals
- Defeated by Toluca in the Clausura 2025 final (failing to score a single goal)
- Beaten by LAFC in the decisive match for Club World Cup qualification
LAFC Takes Club América’s Place
With this victory, the Los Angeles side will take América’s place in Group D of the FIFA Club World Cup, where they’ll face:
- Chelsea (England)
- Flamengo (Brazil)
- Espérance de Tunis (Tunisia)
América, meanwhile, must reassess its path forward before the pressure on Jardine becomes untenable.
