Chronicle: Samuel Enrique López wants to avoid the death penalty

Samuel Enrique López is accused in Texas of the murder of four members of a family and asked the judge not to sentence him to the death penalty.

López, 20, through his lawyers,

asked Judge Oscar J. Hale Jr. of the 406 Criminal District Court in Webb County that if you find him guilty of the four murders, do not condemn him to the death penalty.

The boy is accused of having killed his ex-girlfriend Lesly Sarahy Hernández, 18, his mother Zayra Marlen Fuentes, 33, and his brothers Pedro Cruz, 12, and Julián Saracho, 2, in Laredo, Texas.

Samuel López is the protagonist of one of the crimes that has shaken the Hispanic community in Texas since the boy attacked the family of his ex-girlfriend motivated by spite because the girl ended the relationship.

The chronicle that you are going to read below is based on the legal documents of the case, consulted by MundoHispánico, and based on the investigation of the Laredo Police Department (LPD, for its acronym in English).

Samuel Enrique López bases his request of December 17 not to give him the death penalty on the grounds that his lawyers could not speak with him from the moment he was arrested and that violated his legal rights.

On Thursday, April 16, 2020, the LPD emergency number received a call from a dismayed man who assured that he was concerned because his entire family was missing.

Officers showed up at 6:30 p.m. at the house marked 4500 Vanessita Court, in the southeast of the Laredo metropolitan area, near the corner of Materson Road.

In the house, according to the officers, there were thrown furniture, broken objects and several blood stains.

Faced with the probable commission of a major crime, the patrollers requested the presence of agents from the LPD’s Homicide Division to investigate the case.

One of the officers noted in his report that someone tried to clean some of the bloodstains with bleach.

An alert was immediately launched to search for the residents of the house on the presumption that they were in danger and all the LPD patrollers received images of the four members of the family.

Until that moment, the investigation did not indicate that the alleged perpetrator was Samuel Enrique López, he was not a suspect in the crime and everything was focused on finding the victims.

An LPD patrolman who went out to tour the neighborhood reported that he had spotted one of the possible victims in a vacant lot near the house.

When LPD Homicide Division officers arrived at the scene, they found the bodies of three members of the family killed and hidden in the brush.

The three bodies had signs of having been murdered with violence, seeing deep stab wounds and blows all over the body.

One event left the agents astonished: the body of the boy Julián Saracho was not in the first vacant lot but, when they found him, in addition to being murdered, he had also been sexually abused with an object.

Through the surveillance cameras of the neighbors, the agents discovered that the day before in the night the girl’s ex-boyfriend had arrived at the family home and he looked very violent.

López, as the agents verified when obtaining records of the girl’s and the young man’s phones, had gone to his ex-girlfriend’s house to confront her because she had ended the relationship precisely because of her jealous and violent nature.

According to the authorities, the discussion with the girl grew and at one point he attacked her with knives, with a kitchen instrument, and when her mother went to defend her she also attacked her.

The two children died just for having witnessed the brutal attack that López perpetrated against their sister and mother.

Based on the evidence, the Homicide Division agents issued an arrest warrant for Samuel Enrique López, who was taken to the LPD headquarters.

In his statement, the boy admitted to having killed the family and told how after killing the two women and the older boy he went to throw them into a vacant lot. Then he went back to the house and tried to clean up the blood stains.

The youngest boy, who was terrified, kept threatened while moving the bodies. Then he took him home where he killed him by suffocating him, abused him, hid him in a black bag and then went to throw him in another vacant lot.

Judge Oscar J. Hale Jr. of the 406th Criminal District Court in Webb County has already responded to Samuel Enrique López telling him that his petition is unfounded and that he is eligible to be sentenced to the death penalty.
