According to EFE, at least seven people were killed and another 47 injured in separate shootings across Chicago over the past weekend, local authorities confirmed.

Gun violence once again produced alarming figures in a city already struggling with high crime rates and facing a national debate on how to respond to this security crisis.

According to the Chicago Police Department, the deaths and injuries occurred in different parts of the city in just two days, a tally that reflects the magnitude of the problem.

The numbers confirm a persistent trend: during the week of August 18–24, there were 43 shootings and nine homicides, keeping Chicago as one of the epicenters of urban violence in the United States.

Trump Proposes Militarization in Chicago

The surge in violence comes amid a political context marked by President Donald Trump’s intention to deploy the National Guard in the city.

The president insists the situation is out of control and that federal intervention is necessary to restore order, although his stance has been rejected by local authorities.

Trump has already taken similar steps in other cities with strong Democratic leadership, such as Washington D.C. and Los Angeles, where the deployment of federal forces went ahead despite opposition from local governments.

In recent statements on the social network Truth Social, the president said that “crime is totally out of control” in Chicago, using the figures of the weekend shootings to reinforce his push for militarization.

Mayor and Governor Reject the Plan

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has become one of the main opponents of the measure promoted by the White House.

Last week, Johnson signed an executive order prohibiting local officials from cooperating with the federal government if troop deployment goes forward.

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker expressed a similar stance, accusing the president of using security as a pretext to carry out mass arrests and deportations of undocumented migrants.

Both Democratic leaders agree that the federal strategy does not address the structural causes of violence and could exacerbate social tensions in the city.

Shootings in Chicago Spark Protests

Criticism has not been limited to local authorities but has also taken to the streets.

During Labor Day demonstrations, thousands of people marched in Chicago with banners and slogans against Trump’s plan.

Protesters demanded that the city not be militarized and called for respect for local autonomy against federal government decisions.

The mobilization was one of the largest in recent weeks, reflecting the fears of social sectors that the measure could become an excuse to intensify raids against migrant communities.

National Debate on Crime and Migration

The case of the Chicago shootings is part of a broader debate on U.S. security policy, which has been one of the central pillars of the presidential discourse.

Trump has insisted that urban violence is tied to the immigration status of thousands of people. He has promised a heavy hand against those residing irregularly in the country.

His opponents, however, argue that this is a political strategy aimed at mobilizing his electoral base ahead of the presidential elections.

Meanwhile, Chicago remains at the center of the controversy, with communities seeking solutions to gun violence without resorting to militarization.
