A product recall is underway in at least a dozen U.S. states after bread containing an undeclared allergen was sold at Kroger and Walmart stores.

The affected product is “Lewis Bake Shop Artisan Style ½ Loaf,” sold in states including Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin, according to an alert issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Although the bread’s label warns that it may contain tree nuts, it does not specifically mention the presence of hazelnuts, a significant allergen for those with food allergies.

The omission was discovered after approximately 883 loaves in six batches were found to contain visible hazelnuts, prompting an immediate recall order.

Bread Recall Alert Due to Allergen

Hartford Bakery, the manufacturer of the product, confirmed the existence of the contaminated batches and cooperated with the FDA to notify consumers and remove the products from store shelves.

The Kroger and Walmart recall involves batches with the following codes: T10 174010206, T10 174010306, T10 174010406, T10 174020206, T10 174020306, and T10 174020406, located on the front panel of the packaging.

The recalled bread has a net weight of 12 oz (340 g) and the UPC code 24126018152 printed on the bottom of the package, according to NBC.

Additionally, a best-by date of 07/13/2025 was identified on the front panel, helping customers check whether their purchase is included in the recall.

FDA Warning and Details

The FDA clarified that, as of now, there have been no reports of injuries or severe illnesses resulting from consuming this bread contaminated with hazelnuts.

However, the agency and Hartford Bakery urge consumers with allergies to exercise extreme caution, review their purchases, and return affected products to the place of purchase.

Full refunds will be provided and are available at any participating store where the bread with an undeclared allergen was bought, without the need to present a purchase receipt.

For people with tree nut allergies, the undeclared presence of hazelnuts can cause potentially dangerous allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis in severe cases.

Conclusion

The FDA emphasized the importance of checking labels to ensure food safety and urged all companies to maintain rigorous quality controls.

With this bread recall alert, authorities aim to protect public health, prevent unforeseen allergic reactions, and reinforce consumer trust in transparent food labeling.
